| Description: | Lidya Kots'-Hryhorchuk. Inscriptions on the Works of Ukrainian Medieval Painting (Linguistic and Palaeographic Attribution).
This is the first ever made attempt to research the inscriptions on Ukrainian medieval paintings. The article makes a study of several attributions which are of importance to the research in early Ukrainian art. It acquaints the reader with the methodology of complex researching as well as with problems inherent in graphics, orthography and the language of inscription as a facet of epigraphy. Limited in scope, the “dipinti” on works of painting were more susceptible than works of literature to the impulses of internal and external influences in the development of the Ukrainian language and orthography. Two tendencies in the evolution of written Ukrainian - that towards classicalization of the text, and that towards its democratization - found expression in their linguistic, graphic and orthographic forms of inscriptions. |
